Cleaning your Tile & Grout: Following Best Practices

Writer's picture: William SkinnerWilliam Skinner

Tile and grout are durable flooring options, but they require regular cleaning to maintain their beauty and longevity. To ensure you're cleaning effectively and safely, it's crucial to adhere to the recommendations of the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) and the specific manufacturers of your tile and grout products.

Here's a general guide to get you started:

  • Regular Sweeping/Vacuuming: Begin by removing loose dirt, dust, and debris with a broom or vacuum cleaner. This prevents grit from scratching the tile surface and clogging grout lines.

  • Cleaning:

    • Diluted Neutral Cleaner: Use a solution of warm water and a mild, pH-neutral cleaner specifically designed for tile and grout. Avoid harsh chemicals like bleach or acidic cleaners, which can damage grout and discolor tile.

    • Proper Cleaning Technique: Use a flat mop. Something that will trap dirt, ensuring you're not just pushing dirt around or worse, pushing it into the grout lines.

    • Hire a pro: Yearly, hire a professional cleaning company to professionally clean your floors. Nearly all professional companies utalize a Truckmount system and Hot Water Extract tile and grout. When they are finished make sure they apply a sealer to the grout lines to help protect them.

  • Stain Removal:

    • Act Quickly: Address spills and stains promptly to prevent them from setting.

    • Test in an Inconspicuous Area: Always test any cleaning solution on a small, inconspicuous area of the tile and grout before applying it to a larger surface.

Important Notes:

  • Manufacturer Instructions: Refer to the care and maintenance guidelines provided by the manufacturers of your specific tile and grout products. These instructions will provide the most accurate and up-to-date information.
